The Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training will be the inaugural testing ground for an out-of-competition program at California sales.

The California Horse Racing Board will be collecting hair, urine, and blood samples from horses to be sold at Barretts’ May 28 sale, being held at Del Mar for the first time. The pilot program will not affect the condition of sales. Sale company officials said efforts will be made to minimize inconvenience to both horses and consignors.

“We are pleased to be working closely with the CHRB as it explores a new out-of-competition testing standard for the sales industry,” said Barretts’ general manager Kim Lloyd. “The preservation of the integrity and credibility of sales programs is a top priority. Barretts will assist the CHRB with the process of introducing and implementing the OOCT pilot protocols at the upcoming May sale.”

The test results will not affect the sale of any horses at this auction.
