The Indiana Horse Racing Commission reports no violations of its cobalt regulation midway through the 120 day race meet at Indiana Grand. After 60 days of racing (through July 31, 2015), all of the 221 samples tested were beneath the of 25 ppb (parts per billion) threshold.
The average concentration was 3.65 ppb the mean 3.08 ppb. Over 97% of the reported results were less than 10 ppb.
“Indy Grand’s cobalt levels are absolutely pristine,” said Joe Gorajec, the commission’s Executive Director. “Our regulation has served its purpose as an effective deterrent. My hope is that this trend continues for the remainder of the race meet.”
On the standardbred side, two horses have tested with elevated cobalt levels midway through the 160 day race meet at Hoosier Park. Of the 159 horses tested, the average concentration was 4.06 ppb and the mean 2.55 ppb. The two elevated were 26 ppb and 80 ppb.
The Indiana Horse Racing Commission was the first state in the nation to regulate cobalt. Testing began in September 2014.
Cobalt testing is performed on all claimed horses, out of competition samples, and selected days of post race samples. The Commission’s goal is to test a minimum of one thousand cobalt tests during the 2015 racing season.
